This piece shows excellent understanding of the human figure, along with good feather work. The perspective is intriguing, but the layout seems ever so slightly awkward. Perhaps if the line of attention were slightly more diagonal it would pump things up. This could be achieved by rotating the image slightly clockwise or by angling the weapon more. Although the rough finish provides a wonderful texture to the piece, the shading lingers too much in the midtones. Deepen the shadows, and pump up the highlights (especially on the metal) and this piece will absolutely pop! I also love the expression, which is full of complexity and a nice dose of spretzaturra.
